Our Goal:

To improve the wellness of First Nations children with disabilities and their families by:
  • Gathering and preserving knowledge and developing practices that celebrate community assets while honouring the stories and experiences of First Nations Peoples;
  • Engaging family, community, cultural, professional, medical, and academic stakeholders in creative problem-solving; and
  • Creating culturally-informed and community-driven programs that leverage the strengths of local communities and cultural traditions to improve the health of families and individuals.
We aim to enhance the health and wellness of children with disabilities and their families by leveraging existing community knowledge and skills and developing local, community-led health-promotion initiatives.

Our Objectives:

  1. Explore individual and family experiences of childhood disability in five Saskatchewan First Nations partner communities
  2. Elucidate local First Nations Elder and Knowledge Keeper perspectives on childhood disability in the partner communities and identify current and past First Nations teachings, understandings, and practices on childhood disability, health, wellness, and development
  3. Identify assets and needs among First Nations families and communities as concerns childhood disability, and establish local intervention priorities
  4. Develop, deliver, and evaluate culturally-informed programs and resources for First Nations children, caregivers, and service providers
  5. Build research capacity in Indigenous and Western ways of knowing among university trainees and community-based research associates and academics
